Fatima Frade Reis - Entre les lignes

(...) In the works of Fátima Reis, clarity and enigma are present as an essential latency. The clarity of geometric shapes and the transparency of colours on paper evoke a kind of comforting memory of modern painting, of its plastic and visual purity. The persistence of squares and other polygons, unfolding in rhythmic compositions, refer, in turn, in an ambivalent way, to a minimalist seriality, further underlined by the installation of some papers in the space. Hanging, for example, from the ceiling of a room, they stage a reality distinct from the traditional fixation to the wall, but at the same time interpose a distance that prevents their submission to our gaze. The revisiting of a modern and contemporary aesthetic is not therefore, in this case, a decoding principle, serving rather to support other mysteries that the works gradually unveil: the texture of the various papers, the changing transparency and tonality of the co- lours that cover them and the very fine lines that make up the chromatic forms. What we apprehend is an enigmatic plot, perhaps drawing, perhaps weaving, a kind of coloured gauze, which would reveal the surface that underlies it. Neither painting, nor drawing, nor fabric, it is in fact a laborious contemporary printmaking project that, as it will be, has a central place in the mechanization of human art..... - Maria Teresa Cruz Catherine de Jamblinne accueillera les Amis des Musées pour cette visite.
