For his first solo exhibition with Valerius Gallery, André Wendland (1995), a young German graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe, presents an immersive exhibition on the topic of „the home“ in a bright, bold, and colorful aesthetic influenced by cartoons and popular culture.
Wendland is particularly interested in transferring the dynamic motion of animation into the static medium of painting. This exploration has led him to create vibrant works that often fill the entire visual space of a painting with cartoon-like figures.
Wendland uses washes of oil paint in bold colors to accentuate the playful nature of the works. While the subject matter is important, the act of painting itself—manipulating and bringing the material to life—takes precedence. He uses an iPad for sketching and embraces spontaneity in his creative process.
André Wendland has recently been on the cover of Monopol Magazin (DE, 2024). His work has been exhibited in Luxembourg, Spain, Germany, France, and Italy.
