An introduction to the history of European Picture Frames

Six centuries of picture frames are shown in a bird’s eye view, from the 14th- and 15th-century International Gothic Style, to the Art Nouveau of around 1900. Surviving, original framings will be highlighted as unique combinations of paintings in their first frame, offering exiting time capsules with secrets about context, visual impact and even meaning.
